AUTO ACCIDENTS ARE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR U.S. TEENAGERS

Posted on Friday, June 20th, 2014 at 3:25 pm

A recent article appearing in The Lancaster Intelligencer Journal/New Era reported that auto accidents are the number one killer of American teenagers according to a recent study funded by the General Motors Foundation. A similar conclusion was reached in an earlier report from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

According to the study funded by General Motors, 2,439 teenagers died in auto accidents in the U.S. in 2012. More than half of those killed were not wearing seat belts.

According to this study, about 40% of the teenagers surveyed stated that they had been passengers in cars driven by teenagers who were texting or talking on the phone while behind the wheel.

More than half of the teenagers surveyed said that they had been passengers in automobiles driven by adults who were talking on phones.

If you have teen drivers remind them to use their seatbelts and to avoid texting while driving and other similar dangerous distractions while driving. As adults, we should keep in mind the importance of setting a good example for our children by avoiding dangerous driving habits such as talking on the telephone while driving.

VOLVO EXPERIMENTING WITH MAGNETS TO DRIVE DRIVERLESS CARS

Posted on Friday, June 13th, 2014 at 2:46 pm

According to a recent article appearing in USA Today, Volvo is currently experimenting with using magnets to guide driverless cars.  The magnets are placed in the pavement to create a kind of magnetic highway. Volvo states that the magnets are better than GPS or cameras in guiding self-driving cars because they are not as easily affected by poor weather.

Volvo is currently testing this system at one of its company’s test centers in Sweden and reports that initial testing results have been very promising.  Volvo has plans to test approximately 100 self-driving Volvos on public highways around the Swedish city of Gothenburg using the system of magnetic highways.
