In late August, LG Electronics and Sears recalled over 20,000 gas dryers due to the dryers overheating. The dryers that were recalled included those manufactured from November 2009 to August 2010 and sold under the LG and Kenmore Elite brands.
The recall was issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after 141 incidents of the dryers overheating were reported. In these incidents, at least three injuries to hands and arms were reported, in addition to numerous reports of clothing was burned.
The CPSC stated that the malfunction occurred as a result of the gas valve on the dryers failing to turn off, causing the dryer to continue producing heat even after the drying cycle was finished. Both companies provided customers with free repairs of the dryers.
