Rolling Stone contributor and writer for BuzzFeed Michael Hastings died in a car crash in Los Angeles on Tuesday, June 18, according to his employer and family.
BuzzFeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith reported that the 33-year-old journalist, who wrote a feature in Rolling Stone magazine that led to the resignation of U.S. general Stanley McChrystal, had been killed in a car accident. His employer at BuzzFeed was told of Hastings’ death by Hastings’ family.
According to the Los Angeles police, a fiery car accident in which a man was reportedly burned beyond recognition occurred in the Hancock Park neighborhood. After striking a tree, the car was engulfed by fire, leading to the man’s death, who was later identified as Hastings. Immediately following the crash, however, the local coroner’s office stated that an investigation would be required to identify the burned driver.
